PYRAMID HILL JOINS GREAT MIAMI RIVER DAYS AS PRESENTING SPONSOR

GMRD to be held over 2 days – Badgerland Waterski Show and Rowing are added attractions!
September 8-9, 2006
Neilan Boulevard
City of Hamilton, Butler County, OH

For Immediate Release – June 30, 2006

Planning is well-underway for the exciting 2nd annual Great Miami River Days event taking place Friday, September 8 from 3:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. and Saturday, September 9, 2006 from 9:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. along the banks of the Great Miami River in Hamilton, OH on Neilan Boulevard at Vora Technology Park and Miami University Hamilton Campus. According to Bob Lentz, chair of the event, “Great Miami River Days celebrates our river as both a wonderful recreational amenity and valuable natural resource through combining traditional festival entertainment with water-related activities.”

Great Miami River Days features historical and recreational events while conservation and recreation organizations participate with hands-on displays to help citizens understand the value of the river – both as a natural resource and an economic-development tool. Tony Traub, owner of Hamilton-based American Business Technologies, is chair of the land and water activities for this year’s River Days. He says, “We are very excited to have added exciting new activities to this year’s event that we feel will draw a tremendous number of visitors to what I consider to be our county’s largest natural asset. This year’s event has added water skiing AND rowing to its list of water activities.

Badgerland Waterski Show Team is coming to Great Miami River Days from Merton WI where they have entertained crowds on the waters of Lake Keesus and Nagawicka since 1983. Debbie Fescina Rulon of the Greater Hamilton Convention & Visitors Bureau is delighted that River Days is bringing water skiing to our community. “Badgerland Waterski Show Team will definitely be a highlight of this year’s Great Miami River Days event. The Great Miami River is one of our greatest untapped tourism resources. With the addition of the new water activities, we expect to draw visitors from throughout the region.”

As a joint venture with the Hamilton Vision Commission, Great Miami River Days is also working with several groups to highlight the opportunity for rowing regattas on the river. On Friday evening and Saturday afternoon, students from Xavier, Miami and U of Dayton and UC are offering exhibitions along with high school students involved in Junior Rowing. Tim MacDonald, a member of the Vision Commission states, "We are very glad to be able to include rowing in the water activities of River Days. We see this as an inaugural event for rowing as our intention is to establish Hamilton as a center for rowing in the months ahead. Many within the rowing community have told us that Hamilton is a perfect venue for this type of activity - expect to see many regattas taking place here in the future!"

”CELEBRATE-RECREATE-EDUCATE"

Media Release – September 6, 2006

Friday September 8 3PM-8PM
Saturday, September 9 9AM-8PM
along the Banks of the Great Miami River, Hamilton OH

Great Miami River Days is offering many educational activities for all visitors to this year’s event in addition to the water skiing, collegiate rowing, pontoon rides, music and more! Bob Lentz of the Butler County Storm Water District and chair of River Days states “Our organization addresses water resources and water quality. One of our requirements is to be involved with public education and outreach. This festival is unique because we get to speak to community members that we ordinarily don’t interact with. Typically, our outreach is received by environmental organizations or at events such as “earth day” or “clean-up day”. These events are attended by individuals who already have an interest in our environment. River Days give us the chance to educate people that wouldn’t ordinarily attend our other special events or activities about the river as a valuable resource.”
Butler County Commissioner Greg Jolivette states that events such as Great Miami River Days act as both an educational tool and economic tool. “Historically, the Great Miami River was our economical lifeline and one of the main reasons for early pioneers’ settling in Butler County. The river is now important not only for the economic impact that can be brought through the encouragement of rowing activities but also for its recreational value as well.” Hamilton Mayor Don Ryan agrees, “The City of Hamilton is excited to work together with this county wide event. Riverfront development and rowing are important goals that have been developed through working with the Vision Commission. Great Miami River Days not only works to reinforce these goals but also reinforces our ongoing partnership with various entities within the county.”
According to Debra Fescina Rulon of the Greater Hamilton CVB, Great Miami River Days offers opportunity for local leaders and organizations to work together as a county tool for bringing visitors into our region. This event allows these organizations to educate while offering “Fun for Everyone” from water skiing, rowing, jet skiing, storytellers, historic re-enactors, children’s rides, educational booths, music, food & more! It has very quickly become one of the largest special events in our county in terms of activities. Our expectation is that visitors to the area will grow as well, which brings economic impact to our community through the tourism dollars of these visitors."

The following is a sample of activities to “CELEBRATE, RECREATE AND EDUCATE” along the banks of the Great Miami River in Hamilton OH.

Butler County Soil & Water and Ohio State University Extension offices have put together an ongoing Scavenger Hunt with prize rewards. Kids of all ages can pick up a passport at the Greater Hamilton Visitors Bureau Information Tent or other educational booths along the boulevard. Listed on the passport are the locations where passport holders will either participate in activities or answer a question related to water, safety or similar River Days related topics. American Red Cross, Butler County Environmental Services, City of Hamilton Public Works, Hamilton Fairfield Jaycees, The Lane Library and many more organizations are involved.

"The Great Miami River Days is an important event for the Butler Soil & Water Conservation District (SWCD). River Days allows us to educate and raise awareness of the function of streams and rivers which is a part of our mission" says Kevin Fall, District Administrator. Butler SWCD will have their stream table that allows children and adults to learn about issues with erosion and flooding as they play with this popular interactive display.

Friends of the Great Miami (FOGM) will have educational exhibits and games for people of all ages. Visitors can learn about river restoration, watch a canoe being built, take home information about starting a rain garden or see the educational 600 Gallon fish aquarium a few feet away. Other activities of FOGM include:

• Gerard Holthaus of Ripper Woodwork is building a 15’ wooden racing canoe during the festival
• Meet “Coastie” the Coast Guard Auxiliary’s talking-water safety robot on Saturday
• Nearby is the “flotilla” water safety trailer which will be open Friday and Saturday

The Miami Conservancy District and Crystal Clear Science is hosting an educational tent within the children’s area with water-related activities including scientific experiments, games and art. In “Wetland Metaphors”, participants match objects to what purpose of a wetland they represent. During the “Incredible Journey”, roll dice and travel around the places water can be in the natural world – collect “souvenirs” and make a bracelet to remember your trip! Experiment to compare water’s rate of flow through clay, sand, & gravel, assemble large GMR watershed puzzle and a common household object that is missing a piece or make a print of a rubber fish to take home. Crystal Clear Discovery Science activities include Perilous Plastics, Drops on a Penny and Water Power. Children will learn about our environment while having Fun!!!

Dan Remley is an educator for Ohio State University Extension in Butler County and works on the River Days education committee. One of Dan's professional interests includes promoting health and safety in communities through education and environmental efforts. OSU extension will have the Dermascan machine available. Dermascan highlights sun damage on participants faces and educates participants on sun safety strategies. Bill Charles, also from OSU Extension's safe communities program will be on hand to address boating and recreation safety.

The Hamilton to New Baltimore Groundwater Consortium is offering information on ways to protect your drinking water supply, ways to prevent pollution at home and at work, along with information about individual water supplies. A demonstration using an active 3-dimensional model on how ground water moves underground and how it can be polluted will be shown during River Days.
