Reenactors Camp 1700-1865

Reenactors, exhibitors, and dancers will be having a "Gathering by the River" at this year's Great Miami River Days Festival. Join them to learn more about this historical period. The groups will include:

The historical area has many more educational exhibits and demonstrations too numerous to list here, but here are a few of the highlights:

10:00 AM Festival opens with a cannon salute: (Battlefield)
10:00 Jack Blosser of the Ohio Mekoce Shawnee tribe shares a story of Native Heritage at the time of European contact. (Dance Circle)
10:05 History talks by Generals Robt. E. Lee, Ulysses S. Grant (Battlefield)
11:00 Grand Entry (Dance Circle) 100+ Native American reenactors join in this reunion to celebrate “A Gathering By The River” with intertribal dance demonstrations, and friendship exchanges
12:30 Native Flute by Janice “Sunflower” Tryten
2:00 PM Demonstration of cannon, rifle, and mortar fire by Ohio 5th Light Artillery Unit. Civil war lifestyle demonstration by Rod Grubb

Encampment walkabout round robin style for discussion and demos of
Civil War life (Ft. Miami Encampment Area), living history demonstrations of weaving, pottery firing, forging, tomahawk throwing, flint knapping, blacksmithing, fire starting, camp cooking, cornbread making, bead work, bee keeping (Native Village).

Mark Banks introduces the youth Fancy Dancers in a dance demonstration (Dance Circle).

Battle Reenactment.  Incited by cultural differences and hunger, Chief Jessie sends a war party to attack the nearby Civil War troops (Battlefield).

3:45 Fred Shaw describes Shawnee life. Unconfirmed.
4:00 Rod Grubb leads a tour of the Civil War Camp with Canon and rifle fire        demonstrations (Ft. Miami).
4:00  Intertribal dance demonstrations and drumming erupt as peace is restored (Dance Circle).

Historical Area closes with a blessing from Chief Jessie (Dance Circle).


ALL DAY Self guided tours of the Native Village trading tents (Native Village).

Period encampments will be available for you visit in the Primitive Village or on the Civil War Battle Ground
